Protect those little tootsies! They will thank you later!

We ensure our children eat a well balanced diet. We pack water when they head out to play sports. We push put them to bed on a schedule, with a story most nights. We do put sunscreen on them when they go out, but is it the right kind? The right amount? Should they wear hats, sunglasses, long sleeves when running about with friends?

This article from Trails.com is just the little bit of help we all need this busy summer season!

The faithful application of sunscreen prevents sunburns, premature aging of the skin and the potential development of skin cancer. While adults have plenty of choices when it comes to sunscreen protection, choosing the best sunscreen for kids depends on the children's ages and the kinds of activities in which they engage. For example, children under the age of 1 year should not be treated with a regular kind of sunscreen lotion but instead rely on specialty sun blockers.

Infants younger than 12 months should be protected with UV-resistant clothing in addition to specially formulated sun-blocking lotions. The goal is sun protection that equals an ultraviolet protection factor (UVF) of 50.

The Mountain Sprouts base romper--starting at $28 (as of 2009)--offers the comfort that breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics provide and the whimsical colors. You may choose from three different sizes; small fits babies between the ages of newborn to 6 months, while medium is for infants between 6 and 12 months. Young toddlers between 12 and 18 months should wear a large size, while older toddlers between 18 and 24 months fit into an extra-large romper. The garment comes in canary yellow, cranberry, and indigo.

In a pinch, you may be able to rely on Grangers Sun Shield Protectorant, which is a wash-in garment UVF enhancer. Depending on the clothes you choose for your child, you could enhance their sun-screening abilities up to UVF 50.
Sunscreen Containing Zinc or Titanium Oxide is Safe for Babies

The same ingredient that makes diaper rash creams so effective---zinc or titanium oxide---also makes infant sunscreen safe; sometimes you will see it in combination with titanium oxide. As opposed to other kinds of sunscreen lotions, this cream actually stays on the upper layers of the skin rather than being absorbed.

Adult sunscreens are just as effective on a baby's skin, but dermatologists warn against using them on a child's entire body. The problem arises when the infant's skin absorbs the chemicals, which may lead to diarrhea, allergic reactions and sickness. Choose a specialty infant sunscreen to be on the safe side. A great example is the Baby Blanket brand, which offers titanium dioxide sun block starting at $8 (as of 2009) for a 6-oz. bottle.

Dermatologists suggest that kids should learn to use sunscreen as early as possible. One option is using brightly colored lotions that lose their coloring when properly rubbed into the skin. They are fun for kids and offer all-body protection. The minimum UVF any sunscreen should possess is sun protection factor (SPF) of 30. An example is Avon's Cool 'n Fabulous sunscreen, which goes on blue but turns translucent when you apply it to the skin. A 4-oz. bottle retails for about $6 (as of 2009).

The best sunscreen for kids will do little if it washes off as soon as the child jumps into the pool or begins to sweat. Buy the kinds of sunscreen your children will wear and that are formulated for their activities. For example, sweat-resistant and waterproof sunscreen does not have to be reapplied as often, even if your child plays in a soccer match of swims in the pool. Other enhancements to sunscreens for kids include bug repellents, which are useful when spending time on the trails, and you want to ensure that the youngsters do not get bothered by mosquitoes. Avon offers a 4-oz. pump spray of Skin So Soft that provides SPF 30 and also insect protection. The product starts at $13 (as of 2009).

As children we ask for water to drink. As adults we have to be reminded....

As children we learn that water makes up 80% of our bodies. Water aids in everything from memory retention and concentration to the healthy appearance of skin, our largest organ. Water nourishes our skin from the inside, as we protect and moisturize from the outside.

When the temperature outside heats up, our skin responds and dehydration occurs before we have time to notice or react. To counter the negative affects of everyday day water loss, we must replenish this important nutrient frequently. Doctors and Medical Researchers strive to have us drink 6 to 8 (8 oz) glasses of water every day. This sounds like a lot, and for many can be hard to achieve.

To help keep our bodies stocked with this beneficial liquid, here are a few tasty ways to entice you.

* Purchase an attractive pitcher and keep it filled with water in your refrigerator. Add blueberries, slices of lime, lemon, orange or strawberries for a quick tasty "pick me up".

* Treat yourself to reusable water bottles in your favorite colors and patterns. Each night fill them with chilled water from your pitcher and then change them out thru out the day.

* When eating out, sample new ice teas or flavored bottled water.

* When gift giving, remember your friends will forever benefit from your thoughtfulness when you present them with a lovely water bottle or two.

Be good to yourself this summer. Go have fun in the sun, knowing you have your body covered from the inside out.

Give Yourself a Hand

"They" say we only have 15 seconds to form a first impression. We tend to think highly of someone that dresses well, speaks clearly and makes eye contact. And then there is the hand shake. Have you ever changed your first impression based on a weak handshake or holding clasping dry scaly skin?

Think about it. Is your skin hydrated and smooth? Are Age spots sending the wrong impression? Are your nails clean and well trimmed? Do you shake hands with a firm, confident grip? Depending on your profession, the opinion of your patrons could make or break your career.

Hands communicate more about a person then can be said in a short amount of time. As we deliver our presentation and wave our hands about, they tell how we take care of ourselves. As we prep and deliver food our hands tell how clean the kitchen is. As we point out yet another place a signature is required, our hands tell how we respect our body, and our clients money.

25 years ago in this country a manicure was reserved for the housewife of a wealthy business man and the emerging female business owner. Today 25% of all manicures are reserved for professional men. These men see the manicure as an intregual part of their polished image. Just as woman always have.

Taking care of ourselves should not stop at the neck, wrist or ankle (we'll get to feet in our next blog). Just as we search out proper skin care for our face based on age, season, and skin type, we need to treat our hands with the same respect.
Beyond the obvious of receiving a professional manicure once a month, taking care of our hard working digits is fairly simple.

* Moisturize your hands at least twice a day (am and pm).
* Replace your bar soap with a liquid soap in each bathroom.
* Wear protective rubber gloves when working in the garden and washing dishes.
* Each week when exfoliating your face, exfoliate your hands at the same time.
* Once a week apply your thickest, richest moisturizer to your hands before bed.
* Wear Sunscreen to prevent age spots and sun damage.
* Wear protective gloves in windy and cold weather.
* Eat balanced, healthy foods and stay hydrated!
* Do not bite your nails, or pick at any cuticles or hangnails.
* Always file in the same direction.
* Purchase a good pair of nail clippers.
* Know how you want your hands to look, and keep them that way.

For those of us who are REALLY interested keeping our hands and skin looking young, healthy and strong there are professional treatments that should be considered.
Laser's can remove sun and age spots during your lunch hour. Juvederm and Radiesse are exceptional fillers, used to add volume back into the areas of our hands where aged skin gets stretched thin.

So the next time you dress to impress, give yourself a hand for including them in your basic routine.

What are you afraid of?

It seems that in this age of information at our fingertips, in our ears, on billboards, in magazines and of course on tv, a little bit of knowledge may really be a dangerous thing.
Have you ever been sitting in your favorite chair, the kids are on the computer and your partner is in the other room talking on their Bluetooth when an infomercial for a cancer center comes on the TV? Did you immediately google the cancer center or look up photos of skin conditions and compare them to your own skin spots? Do you research on line, and talk with friends and family about the actress that announced she is recovering from cancer? Are you scaring yourself when a little prevention would alleviate the need for worry?

Well, here is where technology comes in handy. If you have aging, (yes I said aging) skin, large pores, sun and age spots that are already showing, open Bing and download "Obagi Healthy Skin Protection".

As daily exposure to UV light accelerates the aging process and may cause uneven coloring, protection with correction is the right choice!

Obagi Healthy Skin Protection SPF 35 provides a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen.
# Provides healthier skin
# Provides younger looking skin.
# Contains 9% micronized zinc oxide

Coloresciece has a sun protection line for all skin types!

PLAYING MIND GAMES IS NOT BEING PASSIVE AGRESSIVE, IT'S DOCTORS ORDERS!

What's that you say? Playing with the kids in the park helps my memory?
Eating a golden pear or a handful of nuts packed with antioxidants will help me retain the new words I learned while doing the crossword puzzle?
And reading the ever diminishing Sunday comics before my nap will increase capillary development which will increase the blood supply which of course means more oxygen for my strong healthy brain?
These are all great ways to spend our time, but can they really help to generate brain cells and stall the onset of dementia?

Arthur Kramer, PHD, a Cognitive/Experimental Psychology Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign specializes in exercise and brain-health. His studies range from "Capitalizing on cortical plasticity: influence of physical activity on cognition and brain function" to "The effects of video game playing on attention, memory and executive control." He is one of the hundreds of researchers delving into the mysteries of our cerebral cortex health. His neuroplasticity-based research encourages us to eat a variety of foods, play games, laugh and exercise for optimum brain health.

Neuropsychologist Brenda Milner works at the Montreal Neurological Institute and is a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. Her research of 40 plus years has shown physical exercise and game playing to help improve permanent memory and problem solving among many other major brain functions.

So it seems Doctors are encouraging us to play mind games! Why not try this out for ourselves? Head out to the comedy club, grab some new running shoes or pick up a good book and curl up in your favorite chair. In a week or two lets check in and see how we have done. We can remember this, right?

WE KNOW WHAT NOT TO DO, SO WHY DO IT?

In the United States, we are blessed with the ability to receive not just a base education, but an excellent one. The technology at our fingertips allows up to simply touch a button or use our voice to activate the Discovery Chanel, google, Ask.com or Yahoo on our phone, computer and TV. In other words, we have what it takes to act responsibly and make educated decisions.

Dispite this widely available stream of information and knowledge, walking thru the park we witness smokers sitting in the sun with no hat or umbrella and probably little or no sun block. To take this one step further, on the way to Vitamin Cottage, I had my family look for and count the indoor tanning salons. In a 12 mile round trip we found 5 (yes 5!) independent and national places to go indoors and age our skin. That is 1 every 2.25 miles.

On the shelves at Walgreens, Target, Whole Foods as well as out Med Spa's and Plastic Surgeons offices are 100's of line erasing, skin smoothing, age reversing products, designed to repair skin damage. None of these products are cheap, and some may be down right painful! The worst part about this is that much of this skin damage could have been avoided by good decision making in the first place.

But don't despair, all is not lost! With a little education we can change the habits that are creating the lip lines and small eye creases. We have the technology to eradicate sun and age spots and rejuvenate dry sagging skin. Now we need to educate ourselves on protecting our skin from further damage! We don't need to stop living large, we need to start thinking!

Smoking and surrounding ourselves with Cigarette smoke not only damages our heart and lungs, but our complexion! Notice the small lines and wrinkles surrounding a smokers lips as well as the overall dull and pasty skin tone they may have. Aging smokers may be using a powder "cover up" to replenish their healthy look. But powders may seep into those lines, INCREASNG the aging look rather then accenting the natural healthy glow that comes with good skin care! Consider quitting, or at least lowering the numbers of cigarettes smoked each day. Smoking is an addiction. Just like tanning, or heroin. It may be one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. It may also be one of the most rewarding. Seek help if necessary. Pull your family and friends in for encouragement and support. Fill your energy and time with a physical fitness class or that book you have been meaning to read.

Then there is the idea that indoor tanning will only help your complexion. Or the idea that we need to submit our bodies to the Suns full rays in order to be healthy and have enough vitamin D in our systems. While Doctors world wide agree we should get outdoors and play in Nature, we can do so safely while still obsorbing the wonderful nutrients and vitamins the sun provides. Simply use SUN BLOCK containing UVA and UVB cancelling agens. Zinc and titanium oxide need to be present in your SUN BLOCK (not sunscreen)!!! And think about wearing a full brimmed sun hat. While I am a huge fan and collector of golf hats they do not protect any area other then the forehead and nose. Other body parts deserve the same consideration as your cheeks. Do not assume your arms, chest and legs are protected. If you plan on being in the beautiful outdoors for any period of time (by which we mean longer then 15 minutes...) consider longer sleeves or light capris. And please don't assume that the windows in your car will give you any kind of protective barrier. Just notice how your driving arm may be warmer, even tanner then the rest of your body, and wha lah!, you have your answer.

As for Tanning beds. The fix is one of the easiest. Don't! If you need the look of the Sun kissed to feel your most beautiful, try a spray tan or self tanner. There are bronzers that you can apply yourself which will help you acheive the look you are lacking, without exposing yourself to harmful, skin damaging rays.

Be great to yourself. Everyone deserves to look and feel their best. And there is nothing wrong with being a little vain. After all, if you really think about it, we surround ourselves with people and things we find pretty and inviting. So really, we are doing our friends and society a favor by looking great! Now with that in mind, do the right thing. Take care of yourself. You and society deserve it!

Dress for Success in 3D!

Imagine yourself walking into a room full of people that would become business associates, new friends and more. Ideally your skin would glow, every hair would be in place and your attire would express the vibrant, confident person that you are. Isn't this how we would all represent ourselves?

And what if the room you just entered was in a virtual world? Would your Avatar's persona correspond with your real life appearance? Or would it exceed your day to day beauty? What a great way to play with hair styles, clothing, even makeup! Recently we had the opportunity to do just this in Second Life with Gina Schreck! Not only did we network, and share ways to improve our service, we played in gowns and suits and wigs! Several of the more advanced "players" had the rosy glow and long lashes that hinted of their having been in Second Life several times before (their ability to fly smoothly was also quite impressive!).

So I ask you. Would you like to play and experiment with your appearance while seriously working in a fun environment? Do you often wonder how you would be perceived wearing a leather biking jacket or a 3 piece suit? Then step right into this virtual world and express yourself!

And if you are wondering if your real life persona needs some help, to let your true self shine thru, step into Renu Laser and Skin Care. We will ensure when you step out into the real world your skin will be radiant and you will exude self confidence.

Radiant Winter Skin or Chapped Cheeks? Nurture vs Nature?

Winter (and Spring in the Rockies) conjures up images of white snow, hot cocoa and radiant glowing skin. That healthy glow we all have after sledding with our kids, or a great run down the ski slope. But are looks deceiving? Is our skin care regime working? Do we have radiant skin or dry, flaky, chapped cheeks? Winter can be brutal on our beautiful skin! The dry weather and cold conditions during this time of the year can cause our skin's natural moisture to evaporate. And it becomes worse each time we leave and enter a hot building!

Taking care of ourselves and our skin needs to be something we regularly address. The change of seasons is a perfect example. Thank goodness the solutions to dry chapped skin are simple, inexpensive and will return our beautiful healthy glow in no time!

Nurture yourself!

  • Drink H2O (the health benefits are too many to list in one small blog!).

  • Use a humidifier to bring some of the healthy moisture back into the air your furnace is drying out.

  • Exfoliate the dead skin cells once or twice each week and your moisturizer will have the opportunity to target the areas that are craving the help.

  • Ensure your toner does not have an astringent component (witch hazel and alcohol are two very such agents). The astringent will only dry your skin out further.

  • Choose a moisturizer that contains lactic acid or salicylic acid, and remember to use it.

  • Remembering to wash our hands frequently thru out the day will help to protect against the spread of germs, yet also dries our skin out further! Keep a pump lotion on your bathroom vanity and take the extra minute to relax and massage your palm, fingers and wrist until the lotion is absorbed. Reapply generously thru out the day.

  • And as always, use sun screen! No matter what time of year, we are always at risk for sun exposure and therefore sun damage. Even on cloudy days or on the short jaunts to and from work, are skin is exposed.

Good skin care is easy, once we get the hang of it. And good radiant, healthy skin is a gift that keeps on giving!

Red Shoe, Red Lips, Red Carpet!

In just a few hours we will be lounging with friends and family marveling at the beauty and intrigue only the Oscars can deliver.
Even though the Oscars do not sell as many big screen TVs as the Superbowl, there will be more Americans tuned in to this Red Carpet Affair.

  • Who will win Best Actress? Best supporting role, best musical score?

  • Who's gown is the most elegant, revealing, inappropriate?

  • How do these hollywood beauties, male and female maintain their polished flawless look underneath those glaring lights?
This is juicy water-cooler fodder for weeks to come!

Here in Denver the Medispas and Salons have been in overdrive assisting us everyday folk prepare for this evening with our own glamour needs. Facials, Microderms and the sale of beauty products saw an exciting upturn. When we roll out the hors d'oervres we will be representing the best of ourselves, and deserve to look and feel our best.

Here are a few simple and quick ideas from your local Medical Spa and Make-up professionals:
  • Do choose a fabulous shade of red for your lips!

  • Do choose false eyelashes, for the outer half of your top lashes!

  • Do choose a black mascara to really help your eyes pop!

Want to make your eyes pop? A sophisticated cat eye will add a touch of retro glamour to any evening. All you need is your eyeliner, either pencil or liquid — whichever you're more comfortable with. To get the look, follow your lash line from the inside outward, extending the line out past your eye and slanting it slightly upward. The trick is to make sure the length of each line is even. The longer the line, the more dramatic the effect. On the bottom lid, be sure you follow the lash line all the way to the outside corner of the eye, meeting the top line.

Want to up the flirt factor? Try eyelashes, that is. Apply half strips of fake lashes to the outside of the eye to make the cat effect even more dramatic.

Lips deserve to be treated wonderfully. They are the most on display part of our faces. Choose a lip liner a shade or 2 darker then the lip color. From the middle of your upper lip, follow your lip line outward to the point of your lip. Repeat with your other side. Complete this look by lining your bottom lip. Make sure your lines meet with out an overlap. Fill in the lip liner with your beautiful, lush color. A pat of a clear gloss will help to set both your lipstick and the lip liner. DO NOT BLOT. The look for the evening is full and bold, not muted.

What is your Red Carpet look?

Ahhh... I am just now getting my breath back after the incredible events of the Olympics. It seems everyday brought exciting moments and I found myself holding my breath as skiers flew down the hills and speed skaters spun around the track.
But it seems there is no rest for the wicked! Now I must get busy planning the menu, my clothing and hair style for our Oscar party on March 7th.

I am not alone. All over the globe salons and spas are gearing up for the rush of clients that turn out for such glam events as weddings, reunions and of course Oscar parties! This is big business! Viewers such as myself are glued to the TV set. What film will win the most Oscars? What had the best sound track? What will Jennifer Aniston be wearing? What will I be wearing? Will I be able to get in for a microderm before the big event?

The Oscars are synonymous with Glamor, Gossip and the Red Carpet. It is fun to step outside of our day to day and shine along with the rest of the world. So go ahead. Make your appointment for your facial, manicure and up-do and enjoy your own red carpet evening. You deserve it!

Check Yourself Out, Before you Get in the Check Out Line

No one is immune to screaming kids, appointments running longer then scheduled, road work slowing traffic along your route or bad hair days. There are times we just can't get away from feeling rushed, tired and over taxed. But we can use a few simple beauty tricks to keep from looking frazzled.

Immediately after washing your face in the morning, use your toner. This will prepare your skin for your essential skin care products in only 2 minutes (not 20 plus minutes).
Purchase a good quality moisturizer. This will effectively hydrate skin, giving it a smoother, more radiant appearance.
Choose a toothpaste with baking soda. The enhanced look of clean white teeth naturally brighten your face.
(Men, we encourage you to take care of yourself! These tips above great for you too. Mascara optional)
Watch what makeup you put on. Mascara is your friend. It opens your eyes and you will appear more awake. Bright eyes are inviting, just don't over due it.
Remember your sunscreen. At the very least, check out your moisturizer for an SPF or try Sunforgettable.
Harsh, bright makeup is your enemy. Choose a subtle lip color or stain, apply and go!
Last step. Comb thru your hair, wear a clip or grab a hat. It is the final easy touch to your 5 minute, get out the door look.

So the next time you get in the short check out line, behind the person paying with coupons and in pennies, your bright smile, open eyes and glowing skin will radiate calm. Those around you will see a together, relaxed human even when you are not.

Olympic Rings, Beautiful. Circles Under Our Eyes, Not so Much...

The representative symbol of the Olympics is the 5 interlocking ring design. This is recognized world wide as a positive symbol representing strength and limitless possibilities. These 5 rings represent the five continents or major geographical areas of the world. These regions are Africa, North & South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The Olympic Charter states the five-ringed symbol "represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games." Each ring color represents a flag from the country participating in the Olympics. The colors are vibrant and carry a sense of pride and strength. The Colors are blue, black, red, yellow and green.

The interlacing ring design was conceived by Baron Pierre de Coubertin ands first displayed at the 1920 Antwerp Games.

Circles under our eyes typically don't receive the same respect as the Olympic Rings, yet receive the same treatment worldwide. In fact we try to eliminate the blue, black and purple rings from under our eyes as quickly as possible, not put a trading pin of it on the lapel of our favorite jacket.

So what is the cause of these Rings of discontent? Lack of Sleep? Stress? Heredity? Unfortunately, it could be a combination of these and other factors. The skin around our eyes is very thin and delicate. For some it may be translucent. Capillaries are the smallest of a body's blood vessels and are very close to the surface underneath your eyes. The dark under eye circles are broken and bruised capillaries. Every time we rub our eyes we are "bruising" this tender area.
So what do we need to take into account when working towards brighter eyes, decreasing or eliminating dark circles?

  • Lack of sleep may cause our skin to look pale.

  • Allergies may cause dark circles in two ways: histamine reactions cause dark smudges to appear under the eyes and the normal response to the allergy 'itch' is to rub and scratch, aggravating the already compromised tissue.

  • Poor diet and lack of H2O can cause ruddy, discolored areas across the entire face and decollate.

  • Age plays a major part. Our skin becomes thinner, losing collagen and elasticity as we age, thus allowing any dark area, and uneven skin tone to become more pronounced.

Now it is time to get focused, and think of the dark circles as our Olympic rings. So what do we do to achieve the gold medal?

  • Eating a healthy diet will help boost your energy and ward off illness. Including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and boosting your water intake will do your body good. It’s also a great way to reduce the appearance of dark circles under your eyes.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

  • Rest when possible. Close your eyes a bit earlier every night, or simply relax for a few moments after work or school each afternoon.

  • Elevate your head when sleeping.

  • Be conscience of when and why you are rubbing your eyes, or the eye area. When applying skin care, be very gentle. If you are experiencing dry, itchy eyes, check into soothing eyedrops to help reduce the temptation.

  • Check into skin care products that contain zinc and copper to help restore elasticity and build collagen. Glycerin boosts the skin's natural protection by attracting the perfect level of moisture and hydration for the skin.

So unless you are one of those that would rather watch your normal tv shows instead of the olympics, dark circles bad, Olympic Rings, good.

As I learn more about being healthy, strong and beautiful in my 40's, my research has lead me to great food, wonderful Skin Care Professionals and incredible skin care products. But where do I store this yummy food and perfect for my skin products to keep them fresh and readily available? Inside my beautiful stainless french door refrigerator, in the humidically controlled fruit and vegetable drawers, you will find Kale, Broccoli, Strawberries and more. In the top right hand door shelf, there is Silk half and half, Hemp oil, Flax seed and Flax seed oil, and my Obagj Professional-C Serum.

Why you ask do I have my skin care in amongst my tummy filling treats? It is recommended we place Vitamin C rich foods in the fridge as Vitamin C is highly sensitive to air, sunlight, water and temperature fluctuation. And since we are eating these foods to boost our immune system, lower our cancer risk, and heal wounds within the body, we want to ensure the food is at it's optimum when we eat it. It is also known to be a powerful antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C is a water-soluble essential vitamin that is quickly lost from your body, so daily intake is vital.

Knowing this, it makes sense to put the Vitamin C Rich Skin Care in the refrigerator as well. And now I have learned many skin care professionals and skin care manufacturers recommend placing certain nutrient rich products in the controlled environment the refrigerator provides. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is one of the topical agents whose effectiveness against wrinkles and fine lines is backed by a fair amount of reliable scientific evidence. Vitamin C rich skin care is designed to visibly reduce the signs of aging, protect your skin from future damage from free radicals, and support healthy skin function. The smooth serum also boosts collagen, brightens skin tone, and restores needed moisture and hydration to improve the skin's tone and texture.

Keeping some of our skin care products from aging themselves is becoming so highly recommended that there are several companies producing beautiful and affordable "Cosmetic and Medical " fridges, designed to fit in a smaller space such as a bath or hallway closet. Of course I am looking into the pink and black series....
So, now that we know it is cool to keep our products in the fridge, maybe it will replace some of the junk food I once had on that shelf...

Sand Blasting your way to Beauty?

Birthdays, change of seasons, life events and general over all skin care take me in for a skin care consult at least twice a year. I am open to new treatments and ideas, but I prefer to have a plan of attack. What should I be doing for the next 12 months, or 2 years to achieve the skin care goals I have? How will my active outdoor lifestyle affect my decisions? What about the wedding (not mine) I am in this April? What do I do about these (new) fine lines and uneven skin tone?

Of course, a good skin care regime which includes a true Sun Protection is paramount to my overall goal of maintaining healthy, beautiful skin. We have now added a series of Microdermabrasion to my skin care treatments. To maintain the result of vibrant, healthy skin at 46 I am using the Obagi Skin Care Line and my Clarisonic. Colorescience Sunforgettable is my sun protection while I ski, run and as it gets warmer, golf, or just drive my kids to all of their events!

Research demonstrates that Microdermabrasion treatments are effective exfoliant treatments in stimulating cell renewal and rejuvenation of aging skin. The Microderm facial uses a "sandblasting" technique to clean away the outermost layer of old dead skin cells. Although the treatment was a bit noisy, I experienced very little discomfort. My skin felt slightly warm, and tight for the first 24 hours, but I had the treatment at lunch and went right back to work!

A seres of Microderm treatments may be as effective as more invasive, more costly treatments. I have had one and will be going thru a series of about 6 to achieve my goals of improving my skin tone and diminishing some of the fine lines around cheeks and eyes. Microderm treatments range from about 5 to 10 treatments depending on your skin care goals.

Take a look in the mirror tonight, and really take stock of your skin. Do you have fine lines around your eyes? Is your skin evenly toned or ruddy? Do you have pimples or age and sun spots? Now may be the time for you to talk with your Skin Care Specialist about Microdermabrasion.

Clean out your Medicine Cabinet and your Skin

I certainly don't think twice about spending money to get a massage for my stiff neck or tight shoulder muscles.

And once upon a time you could open up my medicine cabinet to find a variety of expensive products designed to clean, exfoliate, purify and protect the delicate skin of my face, neck and decollate.

My Sonicare toothbrush is the first thing I reach for in the morning and the last item I use before I hop into bed at night.

And yet I was hesitant to try something that might clean, massage and revitalize my skin.
So I researched this new skin care product, and learned the Clairsonic Systems would not only accomplish what all my products were designed to do, but would also remove makeup six times better then my current cleansing regime. And in half the time!
The Clarisonic gentle action clarifies and removes dirt and residue from our skin without the use of harsh chemicals or abrasive additives. Skin is left soft, clean, beautiful. My skin has never looked or felt healthier.

Taking their winning design one step further, Clarisonic has just released a mini version. The Mia comes in a variety of colors (my favorite color is pink thank you). This is a dream come true! Now not only are the results beautiful, my medicine cabinet looks beautiful and clean with only 2 items in it, my Obagi Nu Derm Facial Wash #1 and my pink Mia.

So tonight when you wash away your makeup and the dirt from the day, imagine what the Clarisonic could do for you. Your skin and your medicine cabinet will thank you for it.

Pick your Spa Flavor and Reap the Benefits for Years to Come.

Thru-out the world, individuals are seeking ways to improve their health while looking and feeling their most beautiful. And although we are driven by our own unique goals and concerns, the benefits of taking care of ourselves is universal. However, the every day demands on our time may prohibit us from long stints in our Doctors waiting room simply to ask about a new anti aging facial cream or treatment reviewed in a magazine. So we are left with the need and desire to get answers to our questions and find appropriate and cost effective treatments.
Hence, the emergence of Medical Spas specializing in a variety of modalities and products. The concept is one where knowledgeable staff evaluate client's individual needs. The results are personalized treatment plans. These "MediSpas" offer treatments and products in many shapes, sizes and flavors. Massage eases tension and relaxes muscles. Laser Pixel and Photorejuvenation correct the damage caused by age and the sun. Professional skin care products reduce the appearance of visible fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes. Collagen and other injectable fillers plump and smooth the skin's appearance restoring elasticity. Nutritional balance and physical well being impact everything from the inside out. Cooperative treatments may be recommended and individualized plans may be designed around special life events or the changes in seasons.

Choosing a MediSpa is as individual and personal as choosing the family practitioner. Be diligent with your questions during your consultation and be comfortable with your practitioner. This approach will ensure the best experience and results beyond your dreams.

So go ahead, pick your spa flavor, and enjoy the glowing new you.

Get More from Your Mail, by Getting Less

When we open our mail boxes we quickly look thru the pile of envelopes, hoping that 1 in 10 will be a personal letter for us. A true letter, if not hand written, at least addressed with our names correctly spelled.

Most of us will stand above the trash can, dropping envelope after post card directly in, until we are left with the pertinent mail. Shaking our heads at the wasted resources, time and expense that went into the items we so quickly discard.

A few minutes of our time will let the junk mail list makers of the world know we do not desire their "pre approved line of credit", discounted new windows or packages of coupons from businesses we would never do business with. While it may be impossible to stop the unwanted mail completely, we can cut down on the amount of junk mail we waste our time and energy on.

And so be good to yourself and the environment this Valentines and spend less time above the trash can. Follow the links and see how you can get more from your mail box, by getting less.

Send a Smile and Health this Valentine's Day!

No matter how busy we are, when we receive a piece of REAL mail, a card or letter, photos from family and friends, we immediately stop what we are doing and tear into it. A smile lights up our faces and in most cases a happy sigh or sound can be heard from the recipient of these happy tidings. Stress from the day melts away, if just for a few moments. When we share the note or place the photo on the fridge, we are ensuring others may enjoy that warm, fuzzy feeling.

What happens if we have a list that just keeps going of those we would like to send a bit of joy to?
Email and text work equally as well for spreading a "volume" of happiness. Of health actually.

Research shows a smile does more for our health and well being then just the momentary beauty that spreads across our face. It helps to relieve stress and improve our immune system. And smiling is fun and contagious!

So go ahead, use the following links to learn more about the benefits of smiling, creating and sending Free Valentines cards.

At Renu, we wish you many smiles this Valentines Day!

Rejuvinate Your Skin after Vacation.

Holidays and "breaks" are times to unwind and celebrate. Visiting family and friends, traveling, eating a variety of foods that at other times are taboo. Kicking up our heels and just enjoying ourselves.

They may also leave us rough around the edges and tired to our core. Have your ever returned from a holiday trip and found yourself saying "I need a vacation!"?

Our skin reflects these stresses of life. Coupled with environmental pollutants, sun and age, our skin may sag, appear mottled, rough and scaly. We develop fine lines around our eyes and lips and may have enlarged pores or uneven skin tone.

Just as our minds need to be nurtured and refreshed, so does our skin. With the proper anti-aging skin care line and a simple skin care routine, we can stimulate Collagen production and cell repairs. Our skin will become softer, fuller and more resilient against fine lines, sagging, even blemishes.

The Obagi Nu-Derm System is designed to improve elasticity and firmness while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Age and sun spots will lighten, and skin tone is evened out. Obagi Nu-Derm System is clinically proven to result in younger and healthier looking skin.

So go ahead take take a life long vacation from your parched, sun damaged skin. You deserve it!

Men Know Your Rights!

Ok, it's time men stood up for their rights. Their skincare rights that is.

For woman, it is natural to talk with our friends and family on every subject, including skin care. We read every magazine article, do research on the internet and watch infomercials late into the night. We search out an Aesthetician or Dermatologist with questions and concerns, returning home with information and usually samples.

Men typically take easer routes. When things get really bad, they buy the product that is on sale at the superstore, or has a label they recognize. Men will also break down and use the product their partner has in the medicine cabinet, or considerately has purchased specifically for what they see as the men's skin care issue.

Well men, it is easer then you might think to take care of the largest organ in your body, your skin. Dermalogica is a professional skin care line that is worthy of investigation, but it won't be found in megastores or grocery stores. Dermalogicia has a specific group of products created to address many of the common concerns brought on by exfoliating (occurs when shaving), dry environment (hello Colorado), ingrown hair, age, etc.

Some of the products your professional skin care specialist may explore with you are: Clean Bar, Daily Clean Scrub, Soothing Shave Cream and Post-Shave Balm. Many of these products are formatted to be used with an electric razor or by men who shave their head.

So go ahead men, get out there and explore for yourself. It's great to know your rights!

A Gratitude Journal for Valentines?

A few months ago we all made the time to let others know how we appreciated them, were grateful for their place in our lives. And if you are like me, it felt great to acknowledge them. Then we went back to our busy, fast paced lives.

This month, think about starting and maintaining a Gratitude Journal, for yourself. Just as it felt good to let a family member or friend know they have a positive impact on your life, a Gratitude Journal is an easy way to remind yourself of the positive in your life.

Your Gratitude Journal could be written in a beautiful leather bound book, a spiral bound notebook or even on line. Be creative. It is all about what makes you feel good. Each entry should include 5 things that you are grateful for. It could be as simple as writing down how your daughter hugged you good night, or about the cute dog you saw on your walk. As long as your entry is positive, you are on the right track. This wonderful way to end and recap your day may actually only take a few minutes.

Gratitude Journals have been proven to release stress, boost your self esteem and make one more aware of the positive in their day to day life. What a great Valentine present to give yourself!

A Valentine Gift of Confidence....

Did you ever notice how we gravitate towards people that smile and laugh with their full face? People that relax, letting their teeth show, their eyes shining as they express themselves? These people are inviting and exude confidence. And they are generally fun to be around.

Look around your work or the gym. Do you notice a common thread? Could the people with white clean teeth be smiling more naturally, more easily then those with dingy discolored teeth? We see it time and time again. People covering their mouths when they laugh, or not showing their teeth when having a photo taken. Perhaps the natural yellowing that occurs as we age due to diet and heredity play into this lack of confidence. If this is the case, there may be an easy and inexpensive solution.

Professional Teeth Whitening can brighten and lighten teeth 3 to 8 shades in under an hour, for around $150.00. Children as young as 14 have enjoyed the benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening. Brides and grooms routinely have their teeth whitened.

In the Health and Beauty industry, requests for Professional Teeth Whitening are on the rise. This service is second to massage as a gift for birthdays and holidays in the Med Spa industry. Could this be a gift of confidence?

While there are a variety of Professional Teeth Whitening systems available, our research has lead us to Beaming White. As you research a gift for your Valentine or for yourself, take a look at Beaming White. Then you can give the gift of confidence, with confidence. And what a gift that is!

DO YOU HAVE A CRANKY HOUSE MATE?

Has your partner been a bit irritable or cranky this past month? It could be the winter blues. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) has become more prevalent as humans spend more time indoors due to weather, work, studying, and other commitments. Studies show that the human body needs the Vitamin D provided mostly by the sun to help stave off depression and elevate moods. Experts agree there are many ways to boost our moods including exercise, eating a variety of seasonal foods, laughter and taking vitamin D supplements. http://courses.washington.edu/bonephys/opvitD.html

Perhaps a visit to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science will put things in perspective. Thru February 7, the DMNS has a spectacular exhibit of Gengas Khan, a man who certainly could have suffered from SAD as he traveled across Mongolia. Although widely represented as a cruel and ruthless warrior, he is also touted as a great military leader and politician.

So enjoy the sunshine (with protection) when you can and add some fun to your day, to chase those blues away.

Wake up to Beautiful, lush lashes, with Latisse!

If you are like me, you have thin, almost brittle eye lashes. Unfortunately the use of thick mascara just makes them look chunky and stuck together. Fortunately in November during the Renu Girls Night Out Event, the Latisse Rep explained how in just 2 or 3 months I could have beautiful, thick lashes. And it's working! For the first time I have real eyelashes! You know something is true when after a hard workout class your girlfriends comment on how great your eyes look! Yeah! Thanks Latisse! I recommend getting in to Renu this week to get started and enjoy these results yourself. Have a beautiful lash day! www.latisse.com//
